Other patients affected by the Korsakoff syndrome may constantly be inventing a series of new identities, often with detailed and convincing back-stories, as a result of the confabulation symptom. They do this to replace the reality which they have forgotten and lost due to damage to their brain structures.

Amnesia
Amnesia is a series of brain disorders that result in loss of memory, information, and experiences, due to injuries of the head and brain, use of certain drugs and/or alcohol, traumatic events, or conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Anterograde Amnesia
The inability to form new memories and to learn further information or tasks is called anterograde amnesia. The affected individuals may repeat comments or questions several times, or fail to recognize people they’ve met recently.
Anterograde amnesia is triggered by some of the drugs that influence the occurrence of this brain disorder. The abuse of alcohol also has a similar effect.
Retrograde Amnesia
The severe loss of existing memories from before being afflicted by the disease refers to retrograde amnesia. Typically, this type of amnesia that occurs as a result of a loss of consciousness or Korsakoff’s syndrome follows a distinct temporal development.

This symptom refers to an unconstrained reporting of events that have never actually occurred. For instance, a person with dementia may be able to vividly describe the last meeting with their medical practitioner, even though what they say never actually happened.
This brain disorder usually appears as a result of neurological or psychological dysfunction. These false memories, perceptions, or beliefs, may appear as a blend of imagination with memory, or as a confusion of the real memories.
Apathy
Apathy is a syndrome of a neuro-cognitive disorder which partially results from atrophy of the left side of the insula. In fact, any kind of damage to the part of the brain which controls emotions and motivation can trigger a lack of self-worth, motivation, purpose, as well as a general absence of interest in all aspects of life.
Korsakoff Psychosis

Vitamin B1 (or thiamine) is one of eight B vitamins, often referred to as the B-complex vitamins. B1 vitamin aids the health of brain cells. Its main function is to help the neuron cells transform the carbohydrates into energy. It also supports the conduction of neuron impulses in the brain.
When levels of thiamine in the brain fall too low, brain cells are unable to generate enough energy to function properly. In such a case, the lack of this vitamin can trigger severe problems with the central nervous system, including loss of memory.
How Is Korsakoff Syndrome Treated?
In order to prevent the more severe consequences of the Korsakoff syndrome, the affected individuals (alcohol abusers or others at risk) take oral supplements of Vitamin B12 (thiamine) and other vitamins to support the proper functioning of the brain.
After the symptoms diminish due to the administered vitamin B12 therapy, the affected individuals are carefully examined again in order to determine if their medical history, alcohol misuse, and memory problems are consistent with the Korsakoff syndrome.
